How To: Do a shot

Do a shot

Doing a shot is more art than science. Here's one way to hone your barroom style.
You Will Need
* Liquor
* A shot glass
* A bar
* An audience
* A toast
* Salt
* Chasers
* A lime wedge

WARNING: Don't drink unless you're of legal age. Drink responsibly, and never drink and drive.

Step 1
Whiskey, tequila, and vodka are all classic choices. Don't embarrass yourself by doing shots of Irish cream.

Don't waste a fine scotch or top-shelf tequila on shots. The whole point of a shot is to not taste what you're downing.

Step 2
Measure 1½ ounces into a shot glass.

Step 3
For best results, sit or stand at a bar so you'll have something to slam your glass onto after downing your shot.

Step 4
Doing a shot should be dramatic. If nobody's watching, what's the point? Make a toast to attract attention. Buy a round if you have to.

For tequila shots, sprinkle a little salt between your thumb and forefinger and lick it off just before doing the shot.

Step 5
Raise the glass to your lips. Tip head and glass back together in one motion. Let the liquor flow down, bypassing your taste buds as much as possible. Enjoy the burning sensation.

Step 6
If desired, follow with an icy chaser. Beer is a time-honored choice after bourbon. Cola will do in a pinch.

For tequila shots, take a bite of lime just after downing the shot.

Step 7
For best results, sit or stand at a bar so you'll have something to slam your glass onto after downing your shot.

Step 8
Repeat the process. Get someone else to buy this time.

Fact: In 1964 Congress declared bourbon the "official spirit" of the United States.
